Two broad vellum pages, cream and slightly ivory, show fine wrinkles, wavy edges, and the soft thickness of stacked leaves at the left and lower sides. A worn brown leather binding peeks out along the fore-edge. Each page is written in two dense columns of small Gothic script, mainly in dark brown ink, with headings and highlighted words in red. Within the text, numerous square initials stand out in deep blue, muted red, pink, and burnished gold; some contain tiny painted figures or tightly curled foliage, while others are filled with delicate white filigree on a colored ground. From several initials, slender stems escape into the margins, opening into pointed ivy-like leaves in blue, red, green, and gold. On the left page two large initials form almost a vertical vine along the gutter. There are no human figures at narrative scale: the image is dominated by writing, gold glints, and marginal vegetation. The light is even and frontal, revealing the matte grain of the vellum and the slight sheen of the painted areas. In the upper right corner are a small handwritten '19' and a red Roman numeral.","contexto":"According to its source data, the Gotha Missal was made in Paris around 1375, using ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a blind-tooled leather binding. Its decoration is typical of luxury Parisian books produced for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to the king or to a Valois prince, but this is not known for certain, as it has no royal portraits or colophon. It takes its name from its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.","como_mirarla":"First take in the symmetry of the open spread and the regularity of its eight columns of writing, then move closer to the decorated initials. Notice how the vines escape from those letters into the margins. That small, creeping ornament changes the page from a block of text into a living, almost breathing object.","dato_curioso":"Without a colophon —the closing note in which scribes sometimes recorded who made a book, when, and for whom— the royal ownership of this missal remains unprovable, however rich its decoration.","preguntas":["How does the reading experience change when text is also an image made of gold, color, and vines?","What does the luxury of this book suggest about the relationship between prayer, power, and wealth in its time?","What stories can be inferred from a page even when one cannot read its Latin?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Misal de Gotha: fol. This open Missal of Gotha makes me think about hands and materials.
