The text is arranged in two dense columns in tiny black gothic script, with some lines and rubrics in red and blue marking the start of prayers. Large illuminated initials in blue and red with delicate penwork and touches of gold rise in the inner margins, from which spring slender thorny ivy vines in blue, red and gold extending vertically. On the left folio, seven ornate initials form a central column; on the right, another seven are grouped with shorter tendrils. Small gold and blue stars dot the outer margins. The light is even and diffuse, without harsh shadows, revealing the smooth satiny texture of the vellum and the metallic sheen of the gold. Blind-tooled leather binding is visible at the far edges, with wear at the corners. In the upper right corner of the right folio the number XV appears in red and the number 29 is handwritten in pencil.","contexto":"According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the so-called Gotha Missal, a deluxe Parisian manuscript from about 1375, attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and workshop, active at the court of King Charles V of France, who died in 1380. It is executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a blind-tooled leather binding, and belongs to Medieval Art. Its decoration is typical of luxury books made for aristocratic or royal patrons. It may have belonged to Charles V or a Valois prince, but this cannot be proven because the manuscript has no royal portraits and lacks a colophon. It is named after its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.","como_mirarla":"Start with the large blue and red initials in the center and follow the vines that climb and descend as visual guides. Then notice the contrast between the regular black script and the touches of red that structure the reading. Finally observe the small stars and tendrils in the margins, which turn the white of the vellum into a discreet garden.","dato_curioso":"In medieval manuscripts like this one, gold was applied over a prepared ground and burnished to achieve the metallic shine still visible in the initials, a technique that required great skill from the illuminator.","preguntas":["How do you think color and gold helped a medieval reader navigate such dense text?","What feeling does the combination of highly regular script with the freedom of marginal vines evoke for you?","What does the absence of portraits or signatures suggest about who could own and use this book?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El Misal de Gotha: folio 29r, texto iluminado","se_ve":"El libro abierto muestra dos páginas de vitela color marfil amarillento con arrugas suaves y bordes irregulares propios del pergamino.
