The volume is thick, with hundreds of vellum folios in a pale ivory tone, slightly stained and rippled with age, and a blind-tooled leather binding visible at the edges. Each page is laid out in two dense columns of Gothic minuscule Latin text in deep black ink, with headings, rubrics and section marks in red and blue. Large historiated and foliate initials — letters such as T, D, G, H, P, A and E — dominate the layout, constructed from interlaced bands in intense blue, soft pink, vermilion red and touches of burnished gold, sprouting delicate vine tendrils with stylized ivy leaves in blue, green and pink. These ornaments extend vertically to form partial borders that frame the text blocks. Even, diffuse lighting emphasizes the velvety texture of the parchment, the deckled edges, the slight cockling of the leaves and the handwritten foliation 92 at the top right. In the foreground, the thickness of the text block and the shadow of the gutter convey the monumental scale of this liturgical missal.","contexto":"According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 92r of the so-called Gotha Missal, a bound volume made around 1375 in Paris using ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books produced for aristocratic or royal patrons. Most of the ornament is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux, an artist active at the court of King Charles V of France (died 1380), whose style was shared by several illuminators in and around Paris. It is possible the missal belonged to Charles V, but this cannot be proven as it lacks royal portraits and a colophon. It takes its name from the dukes of Gotha in Germany, its later owners.","como_mirarla":"First follow the large colored initials and trace the ivy vines that link letters to margins. Then notice how the uniform black script contrasts with the red and blue cues that structure liturgical reading.","dato_curioso":"Tempera on vellum uses pigments bound with egg, a highly stable medium that helps explain why the blues, pinks and gold remain vivid after more than six centuries.","preguntas":["How does seeing the illuminated letters as visual signals change the way you read the text?","What does the lavish ornament suggest about who could own and use such a book in the 14th century?","What relationship do you notice between the strict order of the columns and the playful freedom of the marginal foliage?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El Misal de Gotha, fol.
