The stone is a medium gray with warm undertones, finely grained yet visibly pitted and softly weathered. The figure is a youthful male with four arms, frontal, feet bare and slightly apart. He wears a very tall, conical crown, the kirita-mukuta, densely carved with layered ornamental bands that add nearly a third to his height. The face is calm, eyes half-closed, lips full, earlobes stretched with heavy earrings and hair curling at the shoulders. Multiple necklaces, a sacred cord across the chest, armlets and wrist bracelets, and a waist cloth wrapped as a dhoti with deep, U-shaped folds between the legs define the body. The upper right hand holds a thin, toothed disc seen edge-on, the chakra; the upper left holds a conch shell, the shankha. The lower right hand is raised in an open blessing gesture, the lower left rests downward in a relaxed pose. Light falls evenly, emphasizing volume in the chest and drapery while the edges of the crown and attributes show age and soft abrasion.","contexto":"According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this sculpture depicts Vishnu in his form as supreme lord and dates to 900–950, early Chola Dynasty, South India, Tamil Nadu, probably from Pudokkatai. It is carved in granite, a typical material for South Indian temple sculpture. The four arms indicate his superhuman, divine nature, and the high crown denotes his royal aspect. The discus held edge-on in the upper right hand and the conch in the upper left are two of his primary emblems. It belongs to the Indian and Southeast Asian Art department. The maker is unknown.","como_mirarla":"Start with the soaring crown and how it gives the figure height, then move to the serene face. Compare the two raised emblems with the two lower hands and their open, approachable gestures. Finally notice the patterned folds of the dhoti and the granular, weathered surface of the granite.","dato_curioso":"Early Chola granite sculptures like this were often set in temple exterior niches, so unlike contemporary Chola bronzes they were carved to endure centuries outdoors, which explains the soft, matte weathering visible today.","preguntas":["How does seeing a deity as both king and four-armed being shape ideas of power?","What contrast do you feel between the elevated sacred emblems and the welcoming lower hand gestures?","How does the plain dark museum backdrop change the experience of an image made for a temple?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Vishnu como Señor Supremo, Tamil Nadu, hacia 900–950","se_ve":"En el centro, recortada sobre un fondo liso de tono vino oscuro, se alza una escultura de cuerpo entero tallada en granito gris de grano fino, de pie sobre un pedestal lotiforme bajo y circular.
