In the center, on a strip of bright green grass, two women meet. On the left, the Virgin Mary, young and standing, wears a long, deep-blue mantle that falls in heavy folds to her feet; her head is covered, her gaze lowered, her hands gently open. Facing her, an older Elizabeth kneels in a red robe over a golden-yellow skirt, a white veil and a blue cap, extending both hands toward Mary's belly in a gesture of recognition and reverence. Behind them rises a Flemish house with steep orange roofs, chimneys, and small windows, flanked by slender trees with fresh spring foliage. In the distance are more rooftops, a pale blue sky, and a low fence. The border teems with life painted in minute detail: silvery acanthus scrolls, blue, pink, and white flowers, red strawberries, butterflies and a large speckled moth, a small bird with a blue tail, buds and seed pods, all casting tiny shadows on the burnished gold.","contexto":"This folio comes from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), a book of hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal one was Alexander Bening, known as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. Books of hours were prayer books for the private devotion of laypeople, not clergy. Isabella probably did not commission it herself: it was likely a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, though this is not certain.","como_mirarla":"Start with the touch between the two women, at the exact center of the scene, and only then move outward to the landscape behind them. Next, look slowly around the border: insects, birds, and fruit seem placed on top of the gold, as if they had just landed there. The contrast between the stillness of the sacred encounter and the small, bustling life of the margins changes the whole mood of the page.","dato_curioso":"The borders of this circle of Flemish illuminators are famous for their trompe-l'œil effect: flowers, butterflies, and birds are painted with shadows so realistic that they look like real specimens laid on the page.","preguntas":["What does it mean that such an intimate scene, of two women recognizing each other's pregnancies, was painted for a queen's private prayer?","Why fill the margins of a sacred image with insects, fruit, and birds painted almost like scientific specimens?","What is the relationship between the luxury of the gold and the apparent simplicity of the encounter at the center?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Isabel la Católica: folio 115v, La Visitación, c. 1500","se_ve":"La página, vertical y rodeada por un amplio margen de vitela color crema, está ocupada por una miniatura de arco de medio punto enmarcada por un borde ancho y dorado. I always pause at the golden border, where you can see the hand of the Flemish workshop.
