The block of Latin text occupies the middle, written in black Gothic script with red and blue initials touched with gold leaf. The large capital letter D dominates the upper left of the text block, its interior filled with reddish-orange filigree and burnished gold patterns, outlined in silvery blue with a sense of relief. Surrounding the text is a wide border painted in a deep, luminous sky blue that frames the entire composition. Over this blue ground unfurls a scrolling vine of burnished gold acanthus leaves, curled and shaded to look three-dimensional and gleaming. Interspersed with the foliage are naturalistically rendered flowers in white and soft pink with five petals, a red strawberry with golden seeds, a pink carnation and small green and red buds. Three mottled butterflies with wings in brown, orange and gray appear to have just landed on the edge. The light is even and flat, highlighting the smooth, satiny texture of the vellum and the metallic shine of the gold. Every petal, leaf vein and insect wing is outlined with miniature precision, creating the effect of a suspended garden encircling the prayer.","contexto":"This folio comes from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic (1451-1504), Queen of Spain, made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, by the circle of the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian and associates, led by Alexander Bening. It is a book of hours, a private devotional book for a layperson rather than a cleric, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Manuscripts from this group are renowned for borders decorated with realistically painted flowers, birds and butterflies. It is not known to have been commissioned by the queen herself; it was probably a diplomatic gift intended to secure her patronage, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, her confessor and later Archbishop of Toledo. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.","como_mirarla":"Start with the large gold and reddish D and then follow the blue border clockwise as if walking through a garden. Notice how the butterflies and strawberries break the geometry of the frame and seem to sit on top of the page. Look finally at the contrast between the rigid calligraphy of the text and the naturalistic freedom of the golden foliage.","dato_curioso":"Flemish books of hours from this circle are famous for their trompe-l'oeil borders in which flowers and insects are painted casting shadows on the colored ground, as if actually scattered on the page.","preguntas":["What relationship do you see between the written prayer and the garden that surrounds it?","Why would a queen need a small private devotional book instead of going to church?","How does your reading change when you know this luxury object was also a diplomatic gift meant to gain influence?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de la Reina Isabel la Católica, Reina de España: Fol. 132r","se_ve":"Página de manuscrito iluminado vista de frente, centrada sobre un fondo color crema de pergamino envejecido. I focus on how this page is made.
