The entire outer border is a vivid vermilion red, densely adorned with raised, curling gold vine scrollwork intertwined with naturalistically painted flowers: white and violet pansies, blue cornflowers, a white daisy with a yellow center, columbines and thistles. A yellow butterfly with dark spots and a small white butterfly hover among the blooms. The surface suggests vellum with tempera and burnished gold, with velvety petals, subtle shadows and highlights that give each flower volume. The scale is intimate, that of a private prayer book, yet the border’s exuberance makes it feel like a garden surrounding a window.","contexto":"This miniature is folio 179v from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451-1504), illuminated around 1500 by the circle of the Master of the First Prayer Book of Maximilian, active in Ghent and Bruges. The principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, working with at least four associates. A book of hours is a private devotional for laypeople, not clergy. Although Isabella’s coat of arms appears on the frontispiece, the manuscript was probably not commissioned by her but received as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros. The circle is celebrated for its naturalistic border decoration with flowers, birds and butterflies, characteristic of late Flemish manuscript painting.
