In the upper right corner a small number, “197,” is just visible in faint ink. Occupying the upper central area, inside a thin rectangular frame with an arched top, a ghostly image shows through, as if seen through tracing paper. At its center stands a tall, upright figure in a dark blue-grey mantle, holding a smaller, lighter-toned figure in her arms; lower down to the right, a reddish patch suggests another person kneeling or bowing. Behind them, washed-out blues, greens, and ochres hint at a setting, but no outlines are sharp. To the right of the miniature and below it, columns of text and large letters from the opposite side of the leaf show through, reversed and blurred. The surface looks smooth and slightly satiny, with tiny dark specks scattered across it, a minute reddish spot near the lower margin, and very soft shadowing at the edges. The overall effect is fragile and veiled: more a trace of an image than a clearly defined picture.","contexto":"This is folio 197r of the Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal artist was Alexander Bening, known in the source as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. As a book of hours, it was made for a lay person's private devotion, in this case Isabella (1451–1504), whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. She probably did not commission it herself; it was likely a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, though this is not certain. The specific subject of the faint scene on this folio cannot be identified with certainty from this view.","como_mirarla":"First look at the page as a whole and notice how little seems to be there; then move closer to the arched rectangle at the top. The key detail is the reversed, blurred text showing through: this is not the main image, but a trace of the page on the other side, and that changes how the whole leaf should be read.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual fact: the writing that seems to float beneath the miniature is reversed and out of focus because it is showing through the thin vellum from the other side of the leaf.","preguntas":["What does it mean to encounter a famous illuminated page mainly as a faint trace rather than as a vivid image?","How does the show-through from the other side change the relationship between text, image, and the material of the page?","Who was this book meant to impress or move, and how might its private use have differed from its value as a diplomatic gift?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de la reina Isabel la Católica, reina de España: fol. The arched rectangle is like an out-of-focus telescope where a tall upright figure in a dark mantle holds a paler smaller one, and a reddish blot hints at someone leaning. In the background there are washed out blues, greens and ochres, like blurry constellations. I am fascinated that we see this through the vellum, like light passing through a thin atmosphere. The faint number 197 at the upper right is my coordinate. Here I do not try to define the scene, but to wonder at how the almost invisible still holds light.","es":"Miro este folio 197 como si fuera un cielo con neblina.
