At the center is a block of Latin text in black and red ink, in a precise Gothic script, with illuminated initials in blue and burnished gold and rubricated headings listing the feasts of January, including the Epiphany of the Lord. Surrounding the text is a naturalistic frame painted with extraordinary detail: velvety red roses and carnations, blue and white pansies, small blue violets, white daisies with yellow centers, and delicate wildflowers on thin green stems. Among the blossoms hover insects and a pale white moth with translucent wings near the top edge, and a fuzzy bumblebee on the right side. Light models each petal with soft shadows and a trompe-l'oeil effect, suggesting dew and texture as if the flowers had been scattered on the page. At the bottom, set into a small circular medallion with a pearled silvery frame, is a tiny genre scene: two peasants, a man in a blue doublet and a woman in a white headdress and green dress, seated at a table covered with a white cloth, sharing a meal by a hearth. The interior behind them is rendered in muted grays and pinks. The whole composition unites fine calligraphy, glowing gold, and almost microscopic painting, highly characteristic of late medieval Flemish illumination.","contexto":"According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the Book of Hours of Isabella the Catholic (1451–1504), Queen of Spain, illuminated around 1500 in Flanders, in Ghent and Bruges. It was produced by a circle of at least five highly organized illuminators, led by Alexander Bening, known as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian (Flemish, c. 1444–1519). The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Manuscripts from this group are renowned for border decoration with realistically painted flowers, birds and butterflies. Although the queen's coat of arms appears on the frontispiece, the book was probably not commissioned by her directly but received as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, who sought her patronage.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central text and its gilded initials, then allow your eye to wander through the border, where each flower and insect is painted as if it had just landed. Finally focus on the small circular vignette at the bottom; that intimate, everyday scene turns a calendar page into a window onto life in January.","dato_curioso":"The borders created by this Flemish circle were celebrated for their scattered still-life effect, with flowers and insects casting soft shadows on a gold ground, an illusionistic invention that anticipated later still-life painting.","preguntas":["How does the formal solemnity of the liturgical text contrast with the lively naturalism of the floral border?","Why might a private prayer book made for a queen include a humble peasant meal by the fire?","How does noticing the painted shadows of insects and petals change your sense of what is real versus painted?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de la reina Isabel la Católica, reina de España: Fol. 2r, enero – Fiesta, c. 1500","se_ve":"La imagen muestra una página de calendario ricamente iluminada sobre vitela, con fondo color ocre dorado y bordes densamente decorados. I pause on the gilded ochre vellum and how well the tempera and gold have survived.
