On the left, a dense block of Latin text in black gothic script, eleven lines high, evenly justified. Each verse opens with a small illuminated initial in burnished gold with pale blue and touches of orange-red, the letterforms crisp against the matte ink. To the right, running the full height of the text, a narrow vertical border panel in warm orange-gold with a soft velvety texture and a trompe-l'oeil shadow as if the panel were laid onto the page. Painted on it, in the foreground, a large pink carnation with softly ruffled petals and a pale blue-grey tubular center, its slender stem bearing two small serrated green leaves rendered with delicate veining and highlights. Below, a smaller pansy-like flower in violet, white and yellow, with scalloped green foliage that curls slightly outward. The light is even and diffuse, revealing the matte tempera, the smooth skin of the parchment, and the metallic glint of gold. The scale is intimate, a handheld prayer book meant to be viewed up close, quiet yet luxurious in every precise detail.","contexto":"A folio from the Book of Hours associated with Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451-1504), illuminated around 1500 by a circle of at least five Flemish miniaturists working in Ghent and Bruges, led by the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian, identified as Alexander Bening. Executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum, books of hours were made for private lay devotion rather than clerical use. This circle is celebrated for naturalistic borders filled with flowers, birds and butterflies. Isabella's coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume was probably not commissioned by the queen herself but given as a diplomatic gift to seek her patronage, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, a Franciscan who became her confessor in 1492 and Archbishop of Toledo in 1495.","como_mirarla":"Start with the contrast between the dense black text block and the luminous border panel. Then follow the carnation from its ruffled pink petals down the stem to the smaller pansy, noticing the cast shadow that lifts the plants off the gold ground. That illusion, a garden resting on prayer, is the key to the page.","dato_curioso":"Borders by this Ghent-Bruges circle pioneered hyper-realistic botanical trompe-l'oeil, painting flowers and insects as if they had been scattered and actually cast shadows on the parchment.","preguntas":["How does having a vivid, lifelike flower beside a prayer change the way you read it?","What does the lavish use of gold and saturated color suggest about who owned and used this small book?","Why might an intimate, portable devotional object be made to feel like a garden?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de Horas de la reina Isabel la Católica, folio 202r","se_ve":"Página de vitela color crema claro, con marcas de pautado apenas visibles, dividida en dos zonas.
