Only the upper left area is occupied: on the right, a compact block of handwritten Latin in dark brown-black Gothic script, about fifteen lines, aligned in a narrow column; on the left, a vertical rectangular border on a matte gold-tan ground. Inside that border, a plant stem rises from bottom to top. At the base is a large deep-red flower, like a rose or peony, with layered petals and a small yellow centre, held by a thin green stem with two bright leaves. Higher up, two pansies open: petals in soft violet-blue, white, and a yellow throat, with curling green stems, small buds, and serrated leaves. The text is punctuated by three small decorated initials in orange, blue, and gold, and by touches of red ink that break up the darkness of the script. Faint ruled lines and prickings remain visible in the wide margins. The light is even, with no shadows except the page's slight texture, giving the gold ground a dusty, paper-like quality rather than a metallic shine. The contrast between the tiny, dense lettering and the large, calm flowers is the page's most immediate effect.","contexto":"This is folio 226v of the Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum by the Master of the First Prayer Book of Maximilian — Alexander Bening — and associates, a circle of at least five painters. A book of hours was used for private devotion by a layperson. Isabella's arms appear on the frontispiece. The book was probably not commissioned by her, but received as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros; the exact circumstances are not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the dense block of text, then let your eye drift left to the golden margin. Notice how the flowers, painted at almost natural size, interrupt the formality of the script. Look closely at the initials: their colour and small scale mark pauses for reading and prayer within the Latin.","dato_curioso":"A striking visual detail: the deep red flower at the bottom of the margin is nearly as wide as several lines of text, yet its two simple green leaves and slender stem make it seem freshly picked and laid on the page.","preguntas":["How does the presence of flowers change the experience of reading a prayer?","Why leave so much empty vellum around such a small block of text and image?","What might a natural-looking flower have meant to a reader around 1500 that a purely abstract ornament would not?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de horas de Isabel la Católica: folio 226v","se_ve":"Se ve una sola página de vitela, de tono crema y en gran parte vacía, ligeramente descentrada sobre un fondo claro.
