Thin, barely visible ruling lines organize the leaf, and a small handwritten “40” appears at the upper and lower right. The text block occupies the left and center, written in dense dark-brown Gothic script in Latin, with about twenty lines broken by smaller red rubrics that mark liturgical cues. Three illuminated initials punctuate the column: a large blue-and-gold D at the top, a blue E with gold and reddish ornament below it, and a smaller Roman numeral-like initial near the bottom. Fine white filigree curls inside the colored letters. To the right of the text runs a narrow vertical border on a matte sandy-gold ground. Painted on it with striking naturalism are four blue violet-like flowers with darker centers and slender curved green stems, arranged diagonally from top to bottom. Between the second and third flowers rests a white butterfly seen in profile, with dark body, delicate legs, and antennae. Tiny painted shadows under petals, insect, and stems lift them slightly from the surface, as if real specimens had been placed on the parchment.","contexto":"This is folio 40 recto from a book of hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal artist was Alexander Bening, known in the source as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. The book was intended for the private devotion of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. It was probably not commissioned by her; it may have been a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, but that is not known for certain.","como_mirarla":"First follow a line of text until a red heading or a large initial interrupts it; note how these color cues guide reading without modern punctuation or headings. Then move to the right-hand border and look at the shadows beneath each petal. The page stops being only writing and becomes a flat surface where painted plants seem to rest.","dato_curioso":"The violets and the butterfly are not set into the margin like flat ornaments: each casts a faint shadow on the golden ground, a trompe-l'oeil effect that makes them look as if they had just been laid down on the page.","preguntas":["How does the reading experience change when text and seemingly real flowers share the same page?","What might these fragile, short-lived natural motifs meant to someone using this book for daily prayer?","If this book was a diplomatic gift, what could its luxury and intimacy communicate that a formal letter could not?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de horas de Isabel la Católica, reina de España: folio 40r","se_ve":"Se ve una sola página de vitela, de tono crema y superficie ligeramente irregular, sobre un fondo claro.
