Most of the visible surface is empty margin; at the center-left is a compact block of handwritten text in dark black-brown ink, in a dense Gothic script with several lines to a paragraph. Some words and headings stand out in red ink, marking the rhythm of the prayer. Two illuminated initials, a D and a C, open sections of the text: they are painted in blue, pink, and burnished gold, with delicate white ornament, and they glow against the dark lettering. To the right of the text, occupying its full height, is a narrow vertical border on a matte tan-gold ground. On it are arranged, with generous space between them, naturalistic motifs painted with almost scientific precision: at the top, a drooping blue pansy with a green stem and leaf; below, a small white flower with a yellow center and a pale yellow butterfly; then a thistle with a magenta-pink head, prickly green leaves, and closed buds; and at the bottom, a pansy in white, magenta, and yellow. Each plant casts a faint shadow, creating the illusion that it has just been placed on the page. There are no human figures. The overall impression is one of order, stillness, and minute care.","contexto":"This is folio 48r of the Book of Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, identified there as the Master of the First Prayer Book of Maximilian. Books of hours were prayer books for the private devotion of laypeople. It is unlikely that Isabella commissioned it herself; it was probably a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, though this is not known for certain.","como_mirarla":"Start with the text and notice how the gold initials guide the eye, then move to the right border.
