The script is a compact Gothic book hand with abbreviations, ruled in straight lines; small initials in blue and red punctuate the text, and a larger decorated initial with gold leaf appears on the left margin. To the right, a vertical border panel with a pale peach background is densely filled with naturalistic flowers that cast soft drop shadows onto the page. From top to bottom one can see pansies in lavender, violet and yellow, a pale blue violet with green leaves, a drooping pink carnation on a thin stem, a white five-petalled flower with an ochre centre, a small intense blue flower, a pink bud and a half-open red rose with green leaves. Petals show velvety texture and delicate folds, with subtle shading that gives a trompe-l'œil three-dimensional effect. The surrounding parchment is light cream with faint ruling lines and gentle creases. Even, studio-like light highlights the matte tempera and the glint of gold, emphasizing the contrast between the austere text block and the lush, colorful margin.","contexto":"This leaf comes from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451-1504), an illuminated book of hours made around 1500 by a circle of at least five painters active in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, led by Alexander Bening, called the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Manuscripts from this circle are renowned for borders with strikingly realistic flowers, birds and butterflies. Although the queen's coat of arms appears on the frontispiece, the book was probably not commissioned by her but received as a diplomatic gift from someone seeking her patronage, perhaps Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, her confessor from 1492 and later Archbishop of Toledo in 1495. It is housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art.","como_mirarla":"First follow the text block and its colored initials to feel its rhythm, then move to the floral column on the right. Notice how each bloom casts a slightly different shadow on the ochre ground, creating the illusion that the flowers are laid upon, not painted on, the parchment.","dato_curioso":"The borders made by this Flemish circle are celebrated for botanical naturalism: each pansy and rose is painted with a cast shadow to mimic a real flower resting on the page, a prized trompe-l'œil effect around 1500.","preguntas":["How does the presence of such vivid, earthly flowers in the margin change the way you read the sacred text?","What is the artist trying to achieve by painting shadows that make the flowers look placed on top of the page?","What does such a luxurious private devotional book tell us about queenship, power and self-image?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de la reina Isabel la Católica: Folio 54r, c. 1500","se_ve":"Folio de pergamino de un libro de horas abierto en vertical, con texto manuscrito en latín en tinta negra y roja ocupando el lado izquierdo y el centro.
