In the upper right corner, handwritten in faint gray, is the number 65. The text, in Latin and in dark brown-black Gothic lettering, occupies about ten lines. It begins with a large decorated initial D, in pale blue and white with scrolling forms over a gold and terracotta ground; two small horizontal gold bands with white and blue ornament close details at the start and end of the paragraph. Below the text, several blank lines and the rest of the page remain empty, crossed only by very faint vertical and horizontal ruling, pinkish and gray, which organizes the space. To the right of the text runs a narrow vertical band with a matte sandy-tan ground, as if it were a small wooden board. On it lie four cut flowers, evenly spaced and rendered life-size: a pale pink five-petaled flower with a yellow center at the top, a deep blue one in the middle, another pink one below it, and a further blue one at the bottom. Each has a thin green stem and casts a barely visible shadow. The light is even, with no strong contrasts; the surface looks smooth, except for the soft relief suggested by the painted petals and gold.","contexto":"This is folio 65r of a Book of Hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, known here as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. The volume was made for the private devotion of a layperson, in this case Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece, not on this page. It was probably not commissioned by her, but received as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros; this is not known for certain.","como_mirarla":"Start with the text block and its large initial, then let your eye move to the wide, almost empty margin. Notice next that the pink and blue flowers are not growing: they lie cut on the tan panel and cast tiny shadows. That small illusion changes a devotional page into something you almost feel you could touch.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual observation: the four flowers are shown life-size and detached, as if someone had just laid them on the page; their delicate shadows on the tan ground create a trompe-l'œil effect typical of the celebrated Ghent-Bruges borders.","preguntas":["What does the contrast between the dense written prayer and the huge empty margin do to the act of reading?","Why paint cut flowers lying on a board instead of a garden or a decorative pattern?","How does the illusion that the flowers could be picked up change the relationship between the reader, the book, and nature?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Folio 65r de las Horas de Isabel la Católica, reina de España — Cleveland Museum of Art","se_ve":"Se ve una sola página de vitela, de un tono crema cálido, que ocupa toda la imagen y deja márgenes muy amplios, casi vacíos, alrededor de un pequeño bloque de texto situado arriba a la izquierda. I pause at the silence of this warm cream vellum, so spacious and empty that the text block seems to float at the upper left.
