In the upper right corner, the number 75 is barely visible. The written area occupies the upper left: about seventeen lines in dense black Gothic script, with short passages and letters in dark red. Very faint reddish vertical and horizontal ruling lines frame the text and extend down the blank lower half of the leaf. Several initials stand out in burnt orange with white filigree, small blue circles, and fine dot patterns; one larger initial at the lower left encloses cream and gold shapes. To the right of the text is a vertical rectangular border in matte gold and tan, like a shaft of warm earth. On it are painted only four flowers, widely spaced, with thin green stems and tiny leaves: at the top, a white flower with a yellow center; below it, a light-blue flower; then a small yellow and blue blossom; and at the bottom, a pink flower with ruffled petals. The paint looks smooth and precise, with almost no shadow. The overall scale feels intimate and small, made to be held in the hands and read up close.","contexto":"This is folio 75r of a book of hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters, led by Alexander Bening, known as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. Books of hours were intended for the private devotion of laypeople. This one is associated with Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. It was probably not commissioned by her; it may have been a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, although this is not known for certain.","como_mirarla":"Start with the column of text and notice how the decorated initials mark pauses for reading or reciting. Then move to the golden border and compare the flowers' almost scientific delicacy with the regularity of the script. That contrast, between measured prayer and ephemeral nature, changes the page from a simple text into an object for contemplation.","dato_curioso":"At the bottom of the page, in red and black ink, one can read the beginning of 'Magnificat anima mea', the opening words in Latin of Mary's song in the Gospel of Luke, a prayer recited daily at vespers.","preguntas":["What changes in the act of praying when the words are surrounded by images of fragile, temporary flowers?","Why might such a precious book have made a powerful diplomatic gift between courts?","What can we learn from a page designed to be touched, carried, and reread every day, rather than merely displayed?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de horas de la reina Isabel la Católica, reina de España: fol.
