Around the oval one can see the faint rectangular pressure of the printing plate and wide empty margins, which make the scene feel like a miniature window. At the left, beneath a canopy and between heavily hatched columns, Pilate sits high on a curved throne or dais, in profile, wearing an elaborate headdress and holding out a short rod. Below him, seen from behind and dressed in dark clothing, a woman sits on the steps and turns toward the action. The bright middle ground opens onto a street where two small distant figures appear. In the center-right stands Christ, tall and still, in a long robe, surrounded by bare-legged guards and soldiers with helmets, plumes and long, thin spears that rise to the top edge. The drawing is made of fine parallel and cross-hatched lines: blacks gather on clothing and architecture, while the untouched paper creates the daylight. Everything is delicate, quick and theatrical, as if a moment of judgment had been frozen on a tiny stage.","contexto":"According to the source, this etching was made in 1631 by Jacques Callot (1592–1635), a French artist renowned for his extraordinarily detailed small prints. It belongs to *The Mysteries of the Passion* and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a gift of the Folio Club. The scene represents Christ being brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, before the Crucifixion. Callot condenses architecture, authority and crowd into an oval only a few centimetres wide, using fine etched lines and leaving much of the paper blank to create light. The exact size and the complete numbering of this impression are not given in the source.","como_mirarla":"Start with Pilate in the upper left and follow the point of his rod toward the center. Then look for Christ's quiet, elongated figure among the soldiers. Finally, notice the woman seen from behind at lower left: her anonymous presence makes us witnesses rather than mere spectators.","dato_curioso":"Despite the tiny oval, Callot fits in at least a dozen figures, a palace, a street and a group of vertical spears, sometimes defining a body with only two or three strokes.","preguntas":["Who truly holds power in this scene: the seated judge, the armed soldiers or the still figure in the center?","How does the woman seen from behind change our position as viewers?","What effect is created by telling such a momentous episode at such a small scale?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cristo ante Pilato, de Los misterios de la Pasión","se_ve":"La obra es un aguafuerte muy pequeño, impreso con tinta negra dentro de un óvalo vertical, al centro de una hoja amplia de papel color crema, ligeramente texturizada. I focus on the material because everything here is a tiny gesture. I see a very small print in black ink contained in a vertical oval, at the center of a wide cream sheet with a soft texture. The faint plate mark leaves a ghost rectangle around it. Black concentrates in the dense hatching of columns and clothing, while untouched paper creates daylight. With just fine parallel and crossed lines, Callot makes a huge trial breathe in a few centimeters, and as a conservator, that feels like a perfect balance between fragility and precision.","es":"Me detengo en lo material porque aquí todo es gesto mínimo. For me this oval is like looking through an eyepiece. The cream paper is a clear sky and the scene happens inside a circle of observation. Pilate high on his curved platform is a fixed point, like a pole star of authority, with his short staff pointing. Christ, pale and still, is the luminous center. The soldiers vertical spears are like meridians measuring space. Callot leaves a lot of emptiness around so the light of the paper brightens the center, just as darkness helps us see a tiny planet that is still full of detail.","es":"Para mí este óvalo es como mirar por un ocular.
