Her face is oval and very pale, with faint pink cheeks, narrow half-closed eyes, thin brows, and a small mouth open in a calm, gentle smile. Her hair is glossy black, styled in a high, full coiffure with side wings framing the face. She wears a layered kimono: an under-robe covered with a tight lattice of orange-red diamonds outlined in dark lines on a white ground, cinched with a broad, shiny black sash. Over it she wears an open uchikake, a long outer jacket with wide sleeves, on a milky white ground densely hand-painted with exuberant flowers in vivid orange, soft yellow, blue and green, with delicate green foliage and fine linear details. Her left hand lightly holds the edge of the outer robe at chest height, while her right hand rests relaxed near the hip. The porcelain surface is smooth and glazed, with a soft sheen, subtle crazing, and areas where the enamel looks almost watercolor-like in its loose application. Tiny, very white feet peek from beneath the hem. The lighting is even and frontal, emphasizing the luster of the glaze and the contrast between the immaculate white of the skin and the lively floral textile.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work dates to around 1690, in Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868), and was made in Hizen Province, present-day Saga Prefecture on Kyushu island. It is porcelain with overglaze color enamels, classified as Hizen ware of the Kakiemon type. It was produced by the Sakaida family workshop, whose head has borne the given name Kakiemon for many generations, giving the ware its name. The studio is noted for being among the earliest in Japan to use multicolor overglaze enamel and for the milky white tone of its porcelain. Figures like this, dressed in layered robes and a floral uchikake jacket, were probably derived from dolls modeled after courtesans. The individual maker is not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the pale face and restrained smile, then move down to the hands and layered garments. Notice the tension between the strict orange lattice of the under-kimono and the free, scattered blossoms on the outer robe, where Kakiemon enamel skill is most visible. Finish with the tiny feet and the luminous milky white that holds the whole composition together.","dato_curioso":"Kakiemon’s distinctive milky white porcelain, called nigoshide, was so admired in Europe that it was copied by early European factories such as Meissen in Germany in the 18th century.","preguntas":["What does the gesture of the hand holding the robe suggest about elegance, modesty or approachability?","Why might a porcelain figure be modeled on a courtesan doll, and what could that reveal about taste in the Edo period?","How does the dialogue between the regular geometric lattice and the loose floral pattern shape your reading of the work?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Figura de pie de una belleza, porcelana de Hizen tipo Kakiemon","se_ve":"Al centro, sobre un fondo degradado gris claro, se alza una figura femenina de porcelana de cuerpo entero, vista de frente y ligeramente girada. I pause on the surface.
