The parchment is warm cream, uneven at the edges, with small stains and a handwritten number, 100, at the upper right. On the left half, a neat column of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script is punctuated by red rubrics and four decorated initials in blue, pink, and gold, some with swirling white ornament. A thin vertical border of curling vines in blue, pink, and gold separates text from the wide right and lower margins. Ivy-like leaves, tiny bell-shaped flowers in red, green, and gold, and several small, carefully painted birds fill these margins. Two hybrid creatures dominate: on the right, a bright red, fox- or dragon-like being with long ears, flowing blue ribbons, a curling tail, and bells on its limbs; at the bottom, a figure with a human torso in a blue tunic and red hood, animal hindquarters in pink, and a long green tail, holding a staff. The scale is intimate, like a private prayer book held in the hands.","contexto":"This is folio 100 recto of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The volume was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists, led by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.","como_mirarla":"Start with the orderly text block, then let your eye follow the vine that separates it from the margin.
