At the far left, a narrow strip of the facing page is visible. The main block of text, on the left half, holds about sixteen lines of compact, regular Gothic script in dark brown ink. Five decorated initials in pink, blue, and gold open the paragraphs, and two horizontal bars with geometric patterns in blue, pink, and gold mark divisions within the text. From one initial, a vertical stem descends and branches across the top, down the right side, and along the bottom, becoming a border of leaves, flowers, berries, and tendrils in blue, pink, green, orange, and gold. The even, museum-photography light reveals the porous texture of the skin and tiny grains of pigment. Small birds with ochre and green plumage, orange butterflies, and hybrid creatures inhabit the margins: on the right, a being with a blue animal body, a red torso, and a green hood turns toward the text; below, a pink figure in a blue hat and green hose stirs a blue cauldron over red and orange flames. In the upper right corner, the number 224 is handwritten.","contexto":"This is folio 115r of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it from a specific workshop, but acquired it — perhaps ready-made for the luxury market — during a trip to Paris in 1404–05. He had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The book was a collaborative effort: six painting styles have been identified, by two Italians, two Frenchmen, and two Netherlanders, under the direction of the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials. This folio is devoted mainly to text and border decoration.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the block of text and its illuminated initials, then follow the stem that escapes from it and turns into the border. Notice how the most playful images — the birds, the butterfly, and the two hybrid creatures — live in the margins, outside the reading. The lower creature, stirring its cauldron, changes the page from a solemn text into a scene with humor at its edges.","dato_curioso":"The principal assistant, responsible for most of the borders, was a Florentine who signed his name, \"Zecho\" da Firenze, on folio 208 verso — an unusual signature in a medieval manuscript, where most artists remained anonymous.","preguntas":["What role did these playful marginal creatures play for someone praying from this book — distraction, entertainment, or protection?","How does the reading experience change when the text is surrounded by so much color, gold, and movement?","What does it mean that a king's personal prayer book was probably bought ready-made and then personalized with his coat of arms?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 115r, texto (c. 1405)","se_ve":"Se ve una página abierta de manuscrito sobre vitela color crema, ligeramente ondulada y con los bordes oscurecidos por el tiempo. I pause on this cream-colored vellum, rippled by time, its edges darkened by centuries of hands and air.
