At center-left sits a compact block of handwritten Gothic script in dark brown ink, with some words and marks in red. Several large decorated initials open sections: they combine deep blue, pink, green, and gold, with tiny white highlights and geometric or foliate patterns, while small elongated markers in pink, blue, and black punctuate line endings. Around the text runs a fine marginal border like a branching vine, in blue, gold, and reddish brown, covered with small three-lobed leaves, red and blue flowers, and tiny green-and-orange bell-shaped fruits. Birds perch at the upper corners and lower left: one pinkish, one yellow-green, another yellow-headed with gray wings. In the lower margin, a hybrid creature with a long green body, red wings, a curled yellow tail, and a pink-and-blue head spreads its wings among leaves. On the right, a small figure with a red hood, blue garment, pink legs, and a wooden staff seems to climb the vine. A butterfly and a flower near the lower right complete the scene. At far left, a sliver of the facing page is visible.","contexto":"This is folio 136 recto of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), a book of hours made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles likely acquired the volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, rather than commissioning it directly. He had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists, led by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials. Books of hours were private prayer books for laypeople; the exact devotion on this folio cannot be known from the image alone.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the orderly block of text at center, then let your eye follow the vine as it frames it.
