On the left, partly cut off, is the facing page. The main text block occupies the upper left: lines of dark brown Latin script in Gothic lettering, compact and regular, interrupted by decorated initials in blue, pink, and gold and by horizontal line-fillers in pink, blue, and geometric patterns. Around the text runs a delicate border of curling blue vines, thin gold tendrils, dark holly-like leaves, small red, green, and gold buds, butterflies, and two perched birds with brown and ochre plumage. In the right margin, a jester-like figure with a pointed red-and-green hat, blue tunic, and long red shoes plays a lute-like instrument. At lower left, a hybrid creature with a pink body, long tail, red broad-brimmed hat, and flowing blue scarf crawls outward. Handwritten numbers appear at the upper right and faintly at the lower right. The gold catches the light subtly, contrasting with the matte parchment and the disciplined black text.","contexto":"This is folio 145r, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant Zecho signed another folio.","como_mirarla":"First follow the Latin column from top to bottom, then let your eye travel along the blue vine that frames it.
