The right-hand page fills almost the whole frame; of the left page only a narrow strip with cropped lines of writing is visible. On the cream-colored, slightly irregular vellum, a dense block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script occupies the upper left. Small decorated initials in blue, red, pink, and gold open several lines, and short bands with geometric patterns fill the ends of some lines. Around the text grows an exuberant border of fine curling vines with pointed leaves, tiny flowers, and buds in red, blue, green, and gold, like small bells scattered across the parchment. In the upper right margin, two fantastic creatures with long necks, horns, pointed snouts, and flowing tails — one pink, one blue — face each other. At lower left, a centaur-like archer with a red body, blue garment, and a bow draws his arrow. The page edges are aged and slightly darkened, the paper-like surface shows soft stains, and at the top a handwritten foliation can be made out. The contrast between the orderly writing and the free, colorful marginal fauna defines the page.","contexto":"This is folio 148r of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles likely acquired this book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant signed himself “Zecho” da Firenze.","como_mirarla":"Start with the orderly block of text, then let your eye follow the vine as it escapes the margins. Notice how the solemn prayer coexists with playful creatures that seem indifferent to the sacred words. Look last at the small colored initials: they organize the reading and also decorate it.","dato_curioso":"The owner's coat of arms appears on no fewer than twenty folios of the manuscript, a visual reminder on page after page of who owned this luxury object.","preguntas":["What role did fantastic creatures play next to a text meant for prayer?","How does our reading change when we learn that this luxury book may have been bought ready-made and then personalized?","What can the collaboration of artists from different regions tell us about Paris around 1405?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 148r, texto","se_ve":"La imagen muestra un libro encuadernado y abierto, visto ligeramente desde arriba.
