The parchment is warm, off-white, slightly wavy and darker at the edges, with a handwritten “723.” at the upper left. Most of the right half is occupied by a neat column of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, arranged in short lines. Large decorated initials in pink, blue, and gold open each section, and horizontal illuminated bars in blue, pink, and gold punctuate the block. A thin blue stem rises along the left side of the text and branching vines spread into the top, left, and bottom margins. They carry curling leaves in blue, red, green, and gold, tiny flowers, buds, and dots of raised gold that catch the light. In the left margin stands a tall hybrid creature: bright blue, long-necked, with a red crest and beak, a green book-like shape at its chest, and an impossibly long blue tail. Below, small birds perch among the vines. At the lower right, another hybrid — a figure in a green tunic and red hood with a pink, dragon-like body — holds out a bowl. Small heraldic shields are tucked into the upper corners of the border.","contexto":"This is folio 164v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it from a single workshop, but acquired it — perhaps ready-made for the luxury market — during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, later having his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The book was a collaborative effort involving six painting styles: two Italian, two French, and two Netherlandish. Its planning and decoration were led by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.","como_mirarla":"Start with the orderly column of text, then let your eye follow the blue vine that frames it into the margin. There, the hybrids and birds take over: notice how playfulness grows as you move away from the sacred words. Look last at the small shields and colored initials, which link ornament, ownership, and reading.","dato_curioso":"The principal assistant, a Florentine responsible for most of the borders, signed his name as “Zecho” da Firenze on folio 208 verso — an unusually personal trace in an otherwise anonymous collaborative manuscript.","preguntas":["Why place playful, invented creatures beside solemn devotional text?","How does the border guide, delay, or distract from reading?","What does adding a coat of arms to a ready-made luxury book say about ownership and identity?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 164 vuelto, página de texto","se_ve":"Se ve una sola hoja de vitela de un libro abierto, fotografiada sobre fondo oscuro, con la página siguiente apenas visible en el borde derecho. I pause on the material quality of this vellum leaf, a warm white that has gently rippled over time and darkened at the edges.
