At the center-right sits a compact block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, written in regular lines on pale, creamy vellum with faint age spots and soft irregularities. Several larger initials interrupt the text in blue, pink, and red with white detailing and areas of gold; short decorative bars in the same colors close some lines. A slender blue-and-gold vine stem rises vertically at the left of the text block and branches across the top and bottom margins into curling tendrils, three-lobed leaves, small buds, and tiny gold, green, orange, and red ornaments scattered like bells. In the left margin, a small hybrid creature with a pointed blue hat, green upper body, and red four-legged body blows a long black horn. At lower right, two rooster-like birds, one reddish and one vivid blue, face off beside a round golden form. The overall impression is of strict textual order surrounded by lively, delicate marginal play.","contexto":"This is folio 182v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours in Paris in 1404–05, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The codex was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. It was planned and decorated under the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted by the Florentine artist who signed himself “Zecho” da Firenze.","como_mirarla":"Start with the orderly block of text, then let your eye follow the vine that frames it toward the margins.
