The warm, creamy parchment shows gentle aging, faint stains near the lower margin, and the number “199” at the bottom right; another number appears at the top. Occupying the upper left and center is a compact block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, written in ruled lines with wide right and lower margins. The text is punctuated by decorated initials in red, blue, pink, and gold, and by a narrow horizontal band in blue and pink with fine white detailing. Around it grows an exuberant marginal border: a winding blue vine with tight curls, pointed leaves, and small flowers and buds in red, green, orange, and gold, some shaped like tiny striped shields. Perched among the branches are two naturalistic gray-brown birds, one near the top right and one near the bottom right. Between them are two hybrids: at mid-right, a long, sinuous pink creature with a red face and blue headdress reaches toward the foliage; at lower left, a figure with a red torso, blue cap, and green legs bends forward holding a small basket. The effect mixes sober legibility with luminous, playful ornament.","contexto":"This is folio 199 recto of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris, France, around 1405, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles did not necessarily commission it from a specific workshop; he probably bought it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the book—Italian, French, and Netherlandish. This folio is a text page, without a large miniature.","como_mirarla":"First read the page as a block of orderly text, then let your eye follow the vine as it escapes the margin and takes over the right side. Notice how the birds bring the ornament back to the natural world, while the hybrid creatures introduce an unexpected, playful note. That contrast between discipline and fantasy is the key to the page.","dato_curioso":"The volume's main assistant, a Florentine artist, signed himself “Zecho” da Firenze on folio 208 verso—an unusually personal trace within an often anonymous collaborative craft.","preguntas":["What changes in the act of prayer when the text is surrounded by creatures that seem to play in the margins?","Why might a king buy a luxury book perhaps already made, rather than commissioning every image from scratch?","How does collaboration among artists from different regions enrich—or complicate—the visual unity of a manuscript?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 199r, Texto","se_ve":"Se ve una sola página de vitela, ligeramente curvada a la izquierda junto a la encuadernación y con el corte visible a la derecha. I pause on the warm cream vellum and how it gently curves near the binding, with the edge visible on the right and faint spots below that reveal age without hiding it.
