Each verse opens with an illuminated initial in blue, red and orange, with burnished gold infill and delicate filigree. The text is framed by an elaborate border that runs along the top, right and bottom margins, forming an inverted T. Thin ochre and pale blue vines sprout golden, green and reddish ivy leaves, tiny flowers and berries. At the top, two small birds perch among the foliage; mid-right, a fantastical green beast with an elongated deer-like body, open snout, red ribbon at its neck and little bells hanging from the vines. Below, a hybrid creature with a human torso wearing a blue cap and reddish-orange quadruped hindquarters crawls along the border. Light is flat and even, typical of manuscript illumination, with glints of polished gold on initials and leaves. Faint handwritten foliation appears at the upper right, and the vellum shows gentle age spotting and texture.","contexto":"This page belongs to the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), a book of hours made around 1405 in Paris in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, the volume was highly prized by its owner, whose coat of arms appears on twenty folios, and was probably acquired ready-made on the luxury Paris market during a trip in 1404-1405 rather than by direct commission. It is a collaborative work by six painters of Italian, French and Netherlandish styles, planned by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, author of seventeen large miniatures, with most borders executed by his Florentine assistant who signed himself Zecho da Firenze on folio 208v.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central text block and notice how the coloured initials guide the eye down the page. Then follow the golden and blue vine that frames it and spot its marginal inhabitants. Linger on the green beast on the right and the red and pink hybrid below: their strangeness is part of medieval imagination and humor.","dato_curioso":"Ivy borders populated with birds and hybrid creatures like those seen here are characteristic of the International Gothic style in Paris, and in this manuscript they were usually painted by a border specialist distinct from the main miniaturist, here the Florentine Zecho da Firenze.","preguntas":["How do you think the sacred text at the center relates to the fantastical creatures in the margins?","How does your reading experience change when each initial is also a small golden artwork?","What does the fineness of the vellum and gold tell you about the value this book held for its owner?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 211r, texto con orlas marginales","se_ve":"Página de pergamino amarillento y bordes ligeramente irregulares, ocupada por un bloque de texto en latín con caligrafía gótica negra y apretada, de unas siete líneas.
