The page is dominated by a dense block of Latin text in dark brown-black Gothic script, arranged in regular lines broken by large decorated initials in red, blue, pink, and burnished gold, some filled with tiny spiral and floral motifs. Along the left runs a tall illuminated initial and a vertical stem from which curling vines spread into the top, left, and bottom margins. Ivy-like leaves in gold, blue, green, and russet, small star-shaped flowers, dots, and tiny shields punctuate the tendrils. The decoration is alive with creatures: at upper left a small bird perches on a branch; below it a long, bright-red hybrid with bird-like claws wears a blue, pointed form on its head; at bottom right a pink four-legged animal carries a blue-and-green shape like a hat. Another small green-and-yellow bird sits at lower left. At top left, a later hand has pencilled “416.” The parchment shows gentle cockling, darker edges, and small specks, and the gold catches the light with a muted shine.","contexto":"This is folio 222v of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles may not have commissioned it from a single workshop, but bought it — perhaps ready-made for the luxury market — during a trip to Paris in 1404-05. He prized it enough to have his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified, by two Italian, two French, and two Netherlandish artists. The overall planner was the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials; his Florentine assistant signed himself “Zecho” da Firenze.","como_mirarla":"First follow the vertical illuminated border that frames the text like a tree trunk, then let your eye wander into the margins. Only afterwards notice the grotesques: the solemn prayer and the playful inventions share exactly the same page.","dato_curioso":"The assistant responsible for most of the borders, the Florentine Zecho da Firenze, left his signature on folio 208 verso — a rare, explicit mark of authorship in a luxury manuscript of this period, where many artists remain anonymous.","preguntas":["What changes in your reading when a prayer for private devotion is surrounded by fantastical animals?","Why would a king have his arms repeated twenty times in a book meant for prayer?","What can the coexistence of six different hands on one codex tell us about how luxury was produced in Paris around 1405?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 222v, texto (h. 1405)","se_ve":"Una hoja abierta de vitela cremosa, ligeramente irregular, llena el encuadre sobre un fondo oscuro; a la derecha asoma el borde del folio siguiente. The brownish Latin ink is still steady, but what moves me is the burnished gold work in the initials and ivy leaves: it glows softly because it is still well bonded. I see the tempera intact in reds, blues and pinks, and the tendrils climbing three margins with little starry flowers and tiny shields. The dark background makes the vellum stand out like a full moon, and the text is an orderly constellation of lines.
