On the aged cream surface, faintly spotted, a single column of Gothic script in dark ink runs down the center, with small red marks and words barely perceptible between the lines. Three decorated initials interrupt the text: square capitals in blue, pink, and gold, filled with vegetal and geometric patterns, followed by a slender horizontal band in pink and blue. The text block is framed by exuberant marginal decoration growing from a vertical bar in gold, pink, and blue along the right side. Slender, winding stems spread through the upper, right, and lower margins, bearing trilobed leaves in blue, red, green, and gold, tiny flowers, and gilded dots. Among the foliage appear small animals and fantastic creatures: at upper right, a dark bird perches on a branch and, below it, a pink dragon with blue wings unfurls curling ribbons; another similar bird watches near the bottom. In the lower margin, a green dragon wearing a red cap bites or holds blue ribbons beside a tiny human figure. A handwritten '436' appears at upper right and '234' at lower right.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this folio belongs to the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. Charles probably did not commission it from a single workshop; he may have acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex—Italian, French, and Netherlandish. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned and decorated the volume. Folio 234 recto is principally a text page, without a large miniature.","como_mirarla":"Start with the orderly column of script, then let your eye follow the vine as it escapes into the margins. Notice how the dragons and birds, tiny yet highly detailed, turn a devotional page into a lively scene. Observe too the contrast between the discipline of the text and the freedom of the decoration.","dato_curioso":"The principal assistant, the Florentine painter Zecho da Firenze, signed his name on folio 208 verso—a rare trace of an individual hand in a luxurious medieval manuscript.","preguntas":["What does the contrast between the disciplined text and the free, playful margins suggest about medieval reading?","What role might dragons and birds play on a page devoted to prayer?","How does gold change our perception of an object made to be held and read in private?"]},"es":{"titulo":"ESPAÑOL / ENGLISH","se_ve":"La página, fotografiada ligeramente en perspectiva, es el recto de un folio de vitela de un libro encuadernado; la hoja vecina y el borde del volumen se insinúan a izquierda y derecha.
