On the left, a translucent previous page is just visible; on the right, the layered edges of the remaining folios form a narrow, warm-toned strip. The vellum is creamy, matte, and gently uneven. The main element is a dense block of dark brown Gothic script on the left, arranged in regular lines. Several initials interrupt the text: a large blue and gold initial at the top, smaller pink, blue, and gold initials below, and short horizontal bands in blue, pink, and gold marking divisions. Around the text grows an elaborate border of thin, curling vines with small leaves in green, blue, orange, and pink, tiny flowers, and many burnished gold ivy leaves that catch the light. Among the branches perch small birds in gray, orange, and blue. In the right margin, a hybrid creature with a human-like upper body, blue torso, red legs, and long ears plays a harp. At the bottom, a green, long-bodied animal wears a pink covering and pulls at a blue ribbon. A faint later handwritten number, “4-99,” appears at the upper right.","contexto":"This is folio 244r of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Books of hours were private devotional books with prayers arranged for different times of day. According to the source, Charles probably acquired this volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists, coordinated by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.","como_mirarla":"Start with the block of script and follow the decorated initial downward, then let your eye travel outward along the vertical stem that organizes the border.
