The cream, slightly aged page is filled with Latin text in black ink with rubrics in red, arranged in two blocks around a large gilded initial. Inside a circular miniature with a red and green frame, on a gold ground, Saint John the Baptist sits barefoot on green grass, wearing a loose blue robe. He has fair, wavy hair, one bare leg crossed over the other, and beside him stands a small white lamb. Around the text runs an exuberant border: a thin stem branches across the top, right, and bottom margins into curling tendrils with small leaves and flowers in blue, red, orange, and gold. Perched among them are brown and pinkish birds, butterflies, and dragonflies. In the upper right, a hybrid creature with a human torso in blue, pink animal legs, and a tail carries a basket with a green plant on its head. At the bottom, a green monster with a long red beak walks left. In the upper right corner is the number 537.","contexto":"This is folio 260v, with Saint John the Baptist, from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours — perhaps made ready-made for the luxury market — during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. Six painting styles by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists have been identified in the codex. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant signed himself \"Zecho\" da Firenze.","como_mirarla":"Start with the roundel of Saint John, almost hidden among the letters, and then follow the stem that frames the text toward the margins. Notice how the decoration overflows the block of writing: the longer you look, the more birds, insects, and hybrid creatures appear. Finally, compare the saint's stillness with the movement of the animals around him.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail: in the lower margin, a green quadruped with a very long red beak seems unrelated to the saint, a whimsical marginal invention typical of luxury manuscripts, where sacred devotion and play coexist on the same page.","preguntas":["What changes when a sacred image shares the page with playful, even monstrous, creatures?","How does the profusion of the border affect the reading of the text and prayer?","What might acquiring a ready-made luxury book, rather than commissioning one from scratch, say about Charles the Noble?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble: folio 260v, san Juan Bautista, hacia 1405","se_ve":"Se ve un volumen encuadernado abierto, ligeramente de lado, con el grosor de muchas hojas de vitela a la derecha y un fragmento de la página opuesta a la izquierda. I focus on the materiality of this creamy, aged vellum page, with its thickness visible on the right.
