At the center sits a compact block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, with headings and initials picked out in red and a small initial in blue and gold. At the top of the column, a rectangular miniature shows a hooded saint in a long black habit, hands joined in prayer and an open book resting beside him, his thin halo glowing orange against a tooled gold ground. Around the text runs an exuberant border: a vertical red bar on the left punctuated by star-shaped medallions in blue, yellow, and green, from which curling vines, leaves, tiny flowers, birds, insects, and gold dots spill across the margins. On the left, a hybrid creature with a human torso in blue, a red hood, and a pink animal body plays a stringed instrument; below, a pink-haired figure in blue with green reptilian legs holds a basket of fruit. A small bird perches mid-margin and a butterfly rests near the bottom, details that reward slow looking.","contexto":"This page comes from the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the book, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant Zecho signed another folio.","como_mirarla":"First look at the small miniature at the top and notice how the saint's dark habit stands out against the shining gold. Then follow the vertical bar down the left margin, from flower to flower, until you reach the hybrid creatures.
