The center is occupied by a column of Gothic script in brown-black ink, with final words in red at the foot. At upper left, a gilded historiated initial frames an elderly saint with a long grey beard, an orange halo, a dark, almost black habit, and a serene expression; he raises one hand and holds a pastoral staff from which hangs a small blue bell. Behind him is a geometric red and gold ground inside a green and pink circle. From that initial, a luxuriant vegetal border spreads through the margins: fine curving stems, blue, green, pink, and gold leaves, small flowers, and dots of gold climbing across the top and falling down the right side. Among the foliage appear tiny fantastic creatures: at upper right, a hybrid in a green tunic with a pink tail and animal legs carries a basket on its head; below, another being with a blue and pink bird's body plays a long wind instrument; small birds and an orange butterfly are also hidden there. The light is flat and decorative, as in miniature painting, and the contrast between the orderly text and the playful margin creates an intimate scale, made for close looking.","contexto":"This is folio 288r, depicting Saint Anthony, from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it directly from a workshop, but acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex, by two Italian, two French, and two Netherlandish artists. It is not known exactly when or how each marginal figure on this page was assigned among them.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the saint enclosed in the initial, the still center of the page. Then follow the border outward: the disciplined text gradually gives way to creatures that seem to escape from it. Notice how the sacred and the playful share exactly the same surface.","dato_curioso":"The principal assistant responsible for most of the borders, the Florentine artist Zecho da Firenze, signed his name on folio 208 verso of this same manuscript — an unusual trace of individual authorship in a collaborative medieval book.","preguntas":["How does the presence of comic creatures in the margin change the experience of a devotional text?","What might it mean that a king acquired a luxury book possibly made in advance, rather than commissioning it from the start?","If six different hands worked on this codex, what clues would you look for to distinguish them?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 288r, san Antonio","se_ve":"La imagen muestra una página vertical de vitela color marfil, ligeramente oscurecida en los bordes, vista dentro de un libro abierto; a la izquierda se insinúa la hoja anterior translúcida y a la derecha el canto de muchas páginas.
