The surface is ivory-toned vellum, slightly uneven, with soft stains and the number “291” written by hand in the upper right corner. At center-left, a compact block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script fills the upper half; some lines and words are in red ink. Three large initials on the left combine blue, pink, red and gold with plant motifs. Smaller initials and a decorated line-filler in blue, pink and gold appear within the text. The whole block is framed by an exuberant border shaped like an inverted U: fine black, blue, purple and orange stems branch out with gilded ivy leaves, tiny flowers, birds and butterflies. In the right margin walks a hybrid creature with a pink human head, a pointed blue hat, a green bird's body and long red legs. Below, another pink animal with a green scarf looks toward the text, and at bottom center a figure with a human torso, green cap and red legs pushes a wheelbarrow carrying a basket. Even light reveals the matte texture of the parchment against the pinpoint shine of the gold.","contexto":"This is folio 291r, a text page from the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, rather than commissioning it directly. He had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The book was a collaborative effort: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists, coordinated by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.","como_mirarla":"Start with the orderly block of text and its gilded initials, then follow the vines until the margins begin to misbehave. Notice how birds, butterflies and hybrid creatures turn a prayer page into a small inhabited landscape. The contrast between devotional discipline at the center and playful invention at the edges changes how the solemnity of the page is read.","dato_curioso":"The principal assistant, the Florentine painter responsible for most of the borders, signed his name as “Zecho” da Firenze on folio 208 verso — a rare visible signature in a book of this kind.","preguntas":["Why fill the margins of a prayer book with creatures that seem to be joking?","What does the contrast between the disciplined text and the free border say about medieval devotion?","How does the reading of the page change when it is known that it was made by artists from several countries?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 291r, texto","se_ve":"Se ve una página abierta de un manuscrito, fotografiada de frente, con el borde izquierdo curvo junto al lomo y una franja del folio anterior.
