At the center, a dense block of Latin text in black gothic script fills the column, interrupted by illuminated initials in blue and red with gold filigree and by small red rubrics marking prayers. Around the text runs a delicate foliate border framing three sides: thin bluish-grey vines curl elegantly, sprouting tiny gold, orange and green ivy leaves, with minute flowers and gold dots that create a sense of airy movement. In the upper right margin, a small monkey wearing a green cloak holds a T-shaped cross as if preaching. Lower down on the right, a green and orange bird perches on the vine, and a dark grey hare climbs through the foliage. At the bottom edge, a pink hybrid creature with a long beaked snout and a blue cloak walks on four legs. The light is even, highlighting the sheen of gold leaf on leaves and initials. The folio shows age through faint staining and soft creases, signs of handling and devotion over centuries.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this folio comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), dated about 1405 and made in Paris with ink, tempera and gold on vellum. The precious volume was highly prized by its French-born owner, whose coat of arms appears on twenty folios. Rather than a direct commission, it seems Charles acquired it ready-made for the luxury market during a trip to Paris in 1404-05. It was a collaborative work by six painters — two Italians, two French and two Netherlandish — planned by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, who painted seventeen large miniatures, with borders largely by the Florentine Zecho da Firenze, who signed his name on folio 208 verso. This folio is a text page with marginal decoration.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central block of script, then trace the winding vine that embraces it like a living frame. Pause on the three marginal creatures on the right and bottom — the preaching monkey, the bird and the hybrid beast — whose playful presence subtly shifts the solemn prayer into something more human and humorous.","dato_curioso":"The borders of this book were largely painted by a Florentine artist who signed himself Zecho da Firenze on folio 208 verso, an unusual act of self-identification for a medieval illuminator who typically remained anonymous.","preguntas":["Why would a prayer book include fantastic animals and a preaching monkey in its margins?","What does the contrast between solemn script and playful border scenes tell us about medieval attitudes to devotion and everyday life?","How does your reading change when you imagine holding this small book in your hands to pray, rather than seeing it as an enlarged image?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 298rv, Texto con márgenes iluminados","se_ve":"La imagen muestra una página abierta de un libro manuscrito sobre vitela amarillenta y con textura suave, ligeramente arrugada. I focus on the yellowish vellum, soft and slightly wrinkled, with worn edges and a small stain that speaks of centuries of use and prayer.
