In the upper left, framed by a deep-blue initial shaped like a rounded letter, a young saint with a halo prays with joined hands. She wears a soft blue gown and kneels on green ground against a burnished gold background patterned with dark scrolling foliage. To her right, and below, dense lines of dark brown Gothic script fill the writing block, with a red rubric marking a new section and a decorated initial below. A thin gold vertical bar runs down the right side of the text and blossoms into an elaborate border of ivy vines, curling tendrils, small leaves, flowers, and tiny birds in blue, pink, red, green, and gold across the top, left, and bottom margins. The margins teem with small hybrid beings: at right, a figure in a red top and blue animal-like lower body raises a scythe-like tool; at lower left, a bare-breasted woman with a green fishtail gestures outward; dragons, insects, and painted flowers punctuate the vines. The scale is intimate, precious, and jewel-like.","contexto":"This is folio 299a of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by two Italians, two French artists, and two Netherlanders. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration and painted seventeen large miniatures.","como_mirarla":"First look at the small praying figure inside the initial, then follow the golden vertical bar into the vine border.
