The text block in Latin sits center-right, written in dark Gothic script with decorated initials in blue, red and gold; the first is a large S enclosing a small red dragon. An elaborate foliate border surrounds the text like a stylized vine, with a deep blue and gold stem, ivy leaves and tiny flowers in red, blue, pink and burnished gold. At the top, two fantastic creatures: a red winged demon and a blue dragon with a pale belly. Midway on the left, a hybrid figure with a tonsured human torso in a furry hooded robe holding a small red book, and pink quadruped hindquarters with a tail. Colorful birds perch on the branches: one green and pink above, one with a yellow breast below. At the bottom, a creature with a blue lion-like body and a human head wearing a pink headdress and green mantle. Even lighting highlights the matte tempera pigments and the gleam of gold leaf.","contexto":"This page comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), a book of hours made around 1405 in Paris, according to Cleveland Museum of Art data. Although owned by the Navarrese king, who had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios, he likely acquired it ready-made on the luxury market during a trip to Paris in 1404-05. It was a collaborative work showing six painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The Master of the Brussels Initials, from Bologna, planned the decoration and painted seventeen large miniatures, assisted chiefly by Zecho da Firenze for the borders. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum.","como_mirarla":"First follow the blue-and-gold ivy vine that frames the text like a living tendril. Then pause on the marginal hybrids — the reading figure with animal legs and the blue creature at the bottom — which turn a prayer page into a world of fantasy. Notice how tiny birds and blossoms create a delicate garden that contrasts with the solemnity of the liturgical script.","dato_curioso":"Illuminated manuscripts often feature marginalia — grotesque hybrids and witty vignettes alongside sacred texts; this folio shows several characteristic examples, such as the reader-hybrid and the blue dragon, typical of the International Gothic style in Paris around 1400.","preguntas":["Why would a prayer book include monsters and comic figures in its margins?","How does the surrounding bestiary change the way you read the sacred text?","What does the lavish use of gold and color tell us about who could own such a book?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Horas de Carlos el Noble, Rey de Navarra, fol. When I look at this page I see the work on the vellum, that yellowish parchment with wavy edges and stains that speaks of six hundred years of history.
