The support is cream-colored, matte vellum, gently undulating, darker and worn along the edges, with small spots and a handwritten number at the upper right. At center-left, a compact column of Gothic script in dark brown ink advances in regular lines. Certain words and passages stand out in red, and on the left two large decorated initials in blue, pink, and gold interrupt the text and anchor the composition. Around the text block runs a fine-stemmed border of scrolling vines in blue, from which sprout pointed leaves and small flowers in red, blue, green, pink, orange, and touches of gold. Tiny birds perch, peck, or watch from the branches. The margins come alive: at right, a green hybrid creature with a curled tail wears an oversized pointed pink headdress; at the bottom, a long-snouted red animal, draped in green and pink cloth, strides across the blank parchment. The contrast between the disciplined text and the free, colorful margins is striking.","contexto":"This is folio 322r of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work involving six painting styles — Italian, French, and Netherlandish. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, assisted principally by the Florentine Zecho. A book of hours was a private devotional book organized around prayers for different times of day.","como_mirarla":"Start with the orderly block of script, then let your eye travel outward to the border, where the page becomes restless and playful. Look closely at the birds perched among the leaves and, finally, at the two hybrid creatures: their presence changes a devotional text into a small world full of invention.","dato_curioso":"The owner had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios of this volume, a visible way of claiming a luxury book that he had probably not commissioned from scratch.","preguntas":["What do these playful creatures do alongside a text meant for prayer — distract from it, protect it, or make it more personal?","How does the reading experience change when the border is almost as absorbing as the words themselves?","What does it say about its owner that a ready-made luxury book was personalized afterward with his coat of arms?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Ficha de pieza","se_ve":"Una página de manuscrito abierto ocupa casi toda la imagen, fotografiada levemente desde arriba, con un borde de la página opuesta visible a la izquierda.
