In the upper left corner appears the handwritten number “74”. At center stands a narrow column of Latin text in dark Gothic script, about seventeen lines long, with abbreviations and small red marks. Three decorated initials in pink, blue, and gold mark the paragraphs; a fourth, tiny and red and blue, peeks out at the end of one line. Around it, a lush vegetal border forms an irregular frame. Slender blue and gold stems curl among pointed leaves, tiny red, green, and orange flowers, and small berries. At the top and along the left margin perch two birds with green, yellow, and grey plumage. Midway down on the left, a jester or grotesque figure with a blue belled cap, red tunic, and green legs makes a dancing gesture while holding a stick. At lower right, a pink and blue hybrid creature with red wings, a long tail, and clawed feet leans over a green shield holding a tiny open book. The light is even, without strong shadows, revealing the matte texture, stains of age, and pinpoint gleam of gold.","contexto":"This is folio 37v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it directly from a workshop: he may have acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05. He prized it enough to have his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists, coordinated by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.","como_mirarla":"Start with the sober column of text, then let your eye wander to the margins, where the page loosens up.
