The upper half and left side are occupied by orderly lines of dark brown Gothic script in Latin, interrupted by decorated initials in blue, pink, and gold and by small line-fillers in red, blue, and gold. A fine vertical rule in blue and gold divides the text from the right margin. From it blooms an exuberant border of curling vines with small pointed leaves in blue, mauve, green, and burnished gold, tiny bell-shaped flowers, and star-like blossoms that spread across the top, right, and bottom margins. Among the foliage appear a yellow-breasted bird at upper left, an orange butterfly at upper right, another bird at lower left, and a second butterfly at lower right. On the right, a green rabbit-like creature stands upright on a pink animal and holds a small inscribed scroll. Below, a jester-like figure in a pointed hat seems to blow or shout toward a bright red, long-tailed beast. The handwritten number \"146\" appears at top right. The surface shows the soft sheen and gentle cockling of aged parchment.","contexto":"This is folio 71r of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, rather than commissioning it directly, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. Six painting styles by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists have been identified in the codex. Its planning and seventeen large miniatures are attributed to the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.","como_mirarla":"First read the page as a block of sober text, then let your eye wander to the margins, where the mood changes completely. Follow the great vine from top to bottom and look for the animals hidden among its leaves.
