A slender vertical rule of bright gold leaf separates the text block from the wide margins. Surrounding the writing is a lavish ivy border that springs from a central golden stem at the top and bottom, its curling blue and ochre tendrils dotted with gilded ivy leaves, tiny five-petaled flowers in red and blue, and bell-shaped terminals in green and gold. The background shows the natural tone of the vellum and a handwritten number 183 at the upper right. Perched on the vines are finely painted birds with yellow breasts and grey wings on the right, an orange bird above, delicate butterflies, and a striking green dragon-hybrid with a spiny crest and coiled tail emerging from the foliage at mid-right. At the bottom margin a minute scribe figure wearing a red cap, blue tunic and red hose leans over a light wooden desk, holding his tools, as if he had stepped out of the border itself. Even, soft light catches the shimmer of gold and the matte tempera colors.","contexto":"This folio comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made around 1405 in Paris with ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume was not a direct commission but was likely acquired ready-made on the luxury market during the king's trip to Paris in 1404–05, and his coat of arms appears on about twenty folios. It was a collaborative production showing six painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The overall design and seventeen large miniatures are attributed to a Bolognese painter known as the Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted principally on the borders by a Florentine who signed as Zecho da Firenze on folio 208 verso. The text here is from a psalm.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central text block and its glittering initials on the left, then follow the golden vine that splits the page to spot birds and the green dragon. Finally pause on the tiny scribe at the bottom margin: that self-referential figure turns the playful border into a statement about the making of the book itself.","dato_curioso":"The tiny scribe painted at the foot of the border shows the medieval illuminator at work at his desk, a self-portrait of the book's craft hidden inside the decoration.","preguntas":["How does the solemn sacred text in the center relate to the playful fantastic creatures in the margins?","What does the repeated royal coat of arms and the humble scribe figure tell us about the book as a status object?","In what ways do gold, color and interlaced ivy lead your eye across the page like a garden?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de Horas de Carlos el Noble, rey de Navarra: folio 92r, Texto","se_ve":"En primer plano se ve una página de vitela amarillenta y arrugada, con texto en latín en tinta negra dispuesta en siete líneas en la mitad izquierda, cada verso iniciado por una inicial decorada en azul, rojo, dorado y naranja con motivos geométricos y trazos finos.
