A beardless young man stands with thick, curly hair falling to his shoulders, carrying a sheep across his back and neck, its fleece carved in dense, rough texture. With his left hand he holds the animal’s front legs; its head, on the viewer’s left, tilts upward with its muzzle slightly open. The shepherd wears a knee-length tunic gathered at the waist and a cloak falling from his right shoulder. In his lowered right hand he holds a long, wavy staff that also serves as a structural support. He wears low boots. His legs form a calm stride, one foot forward and the other slightly back. At his feet, on an irregular oval base suggesting bare ground, are two small sheep: one on the left raises its head toward him, while the other on the right seems to graze or rest beside a rough tree trunk rising behind his left leg. The stone shows veining, brown staining, wear, and small losses, especially on the base and the small animals. Soft light from the upper left models the deep folds of the clothing and leaves delicate shadows on his serene face, with almond-shaped eyes and a small mouth.","contexto":"According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a marble sculpture by an unknown maker, dated to 280–90 CE and attributed to Anatolia in the late Roman and early Christian world. Images of a youthful shepherd carrying a sheep on his shoulders were popular among Romans of traditional faith as well as Christians. They could evoke a peaceful life after death or, for Christians, refer to Christ in John 10:11: “I am the good shepherd.” The source notes that it was allegedly found together with Jonah statuettes, so it probably represents Christ as the Good Shepherd, although that identification is not certain.","como_mirarla":"Start with the sheep resting across his shoulders and notice how its weight seems light rather than burdensome. Then look down to the two small animals at his feet and to the staff that also supports the figure. That contrast between carrying and guiding changes the scene from a farm task into an image of care.","dato_curioso":"The motif of a figure carrying a ram or sheep on the shoulders, known in Greek art as the kriophoros, existed centuries before it was adopted as an early Christian image of Christ.","preguntas":["How does the image change if we think of the young man as an ordinary shepherd rather than as Christ?","What visual elements convey protection or trust without showing any dramatic action?","Why might an image shared by different beliefs have been useful in the late Roman world?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El Buen Pastor","se_ve":"Escultura de mármol claro, fotografiada de frente sobre un fondo gris degradado, ocupa el centro vertical de la imagen. I focus on the material: light marble with veining and brownish stains, photographed in soft light from upper left. I notice wear on the oval base and on the two small sheep, and the deep folds of the short tunic and mantle falling with weight. The shepherd is the vertical axis at the center, caught in a calm step: one leg forward, one slightly back. The sheep across his shoulders forms an arch, and below two small sheep balance the base like companion stars. The long staff is a guiding line, like a visual meridian. The light modeling his serene face and curly hair reminds me of how we observe: looking for balance, center, and slow movement in space.","es":"Miro esta composición como si fuera una constelación.
