It stands on a small flared black-glazed foot, with a tapered lower body, an elongated ovoid midsection, and a long cylindrical neck topped by a flat mouth and a lid-like rim. A thick, looped bail handle arches over the top, with a small perforation at its apex and visible wear on its inner edge. The neck is decorated with vertical black stripes on a pale orange clay ground, transitioning to a radiating tongue pattern at the shoulder. The main body is coated in glossy black glaze framing a reserved panel with three female figures in red-figure technique: two seated above holding a tray and a round mirror, and one standing below near a small column and a wavy ribbon. Their drapery shows fine folded lines, and their skin was originally heightened in added white now largely faded to a pale cream. Large, elaborate palmettes in orange flank the figural field, and a meander and dot band runs below. Surface shows minor abrasions, firing variations, and matte-to-gloss textures.","contexto":"This is a bail amphora, a storage vessel named for the tall handle arching over the mouth, made circa 330–320 BCE in Campania, South Italy, at Cumae. It is attributed to the anonymous CA Painter, for Cumae A, of the Walters Sub-group, the first significant red-figure artist in that center, active around 350–320 BCE. Vases of this shape were produced at Capua and Cumae in the 4th century BCE. The seated and standing draped women, some partially draped with added white for flesh now largely lost, and the elaborate palmette ornaments on either side are typical of this painter's repertory. The work belongs to the Greek and Roman Art collection, credited as a Gift of the Italian Ministry of Public Education, according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. Its original findspot and use are not documented.","como_mirarla":"Start at the arched bail handle and follow the striped neck down to the figural panel. Compare the two seated figures at the top with the standing figure below and notice the faint white highlights. Finally trace the large palmettes and wave border that frame and contain the scene.","dato_curioso":"The added white pigment used for female skin on South Italian red-figure vases often flakes away over time, which is why the women here appear patchy and pale today.","preguntas":["How does the faded white coloring affect how you perceive the figures' gestures and status?","What relationship do you see between an everyday domestic scene and a tall, formal storage vessel?","How do the ornamental palmettes change the focus and rhythm of the central composition?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Ánfora de asa puente de figuras rojas: mujeres con drapeados","se_ve":"La pieza es un vaso cerámico alto y esbelto, de pie estrecho y cuerpo alargado que se ensancha suavemente hacia los hombros y culmina en un cuello largo y cilíndrico con boca plana y tapa; sobre ella se arquea un asa puente gruesa en forma de arco.
