The figure occupies most of the vertical space and sits on a tall, multi-level pedestal that is wider than its crossed legs. The Buddha sits in the lotus position, with his legs firmly interlaced and the sole of one foot visible. His right arm extends downward and his long fingers lightly touch the seat in front of his knee; his left hand rests in his lap, partly holding the other hand. The torso is bare on the right side, while a fine robe covers the left shoulder and arm, with soft folds and a decorated edge across the chest. The surface of the body looks smooth and slightly polished, in contrast to the patterned hair, formed by small, tight curls crowned by a rounded ushnisha. The ears are long, the face oval, the eyes lowered, and the mouth small, with a serene expression. Beneath the legs is a small double-headed vajra. The seat has two rows of lotus petals, a stepped base, an openwork central section with a hanging cloth motif in the middle and a small lion on each side, and six short feet. Small patches of green patina appear, especially near the base.","contexto":"Dated to the late 800s, this work comes from Kurkihar, Bihar, in northeastern India, and was made by an unknown artist during the Pala period (750–1134). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it belonged to a cache that yielded some of the most masterful works in the north Indian bronze tradition, at a time when tantric imagery was first emerging in the region. The vajra on the pedestal identifies it as a tantric image. Akshobhya is one of the Five Cosmic Buddhas, associated with the east, and is especially invoked to eradicate anger. Its specific original use is not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the face and its serene downward gaze, then follow the right arm down to the fingertips that reach toward the seat. From there, look for the small vajra in front of the crossed legs and finish at the base, where the two lions turn an apparently solid pedestal into an open, architectural structure.","dato_curioso":"The eyes and lips stand out against the dark bronze because of their silver and copper inlay: two metals with different tones that subtly animate the face when they catch the light.","preguntas":["How does the gesture of the hand touching the seat change the sense of stability conveyed by the figure?","What relationship is created between the stillness of the Buddha and the lions placed inside the pedestal?","Why might an image associated with overcoming anger be represented with such a calm expression and almost no movement?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Akshobhya: el Buda del Este","se_ve":"Vista de frente y centrada sobre un fondo liso que pasa del gris oscuro en la parte superior al gris claro abajo, una escultura de bronce oscuro, con tonos verdosos y levemente dorados, se levanta en medio del encuadre. I pause in front of the bronze and observe its dark surface with greenish veils and golden glints showing through the patina, especially near the base of the pedestal. I imagine him facing the gray horizon that fades from dark to light, like the background in the photo. His right hand touching the seat and his serene lotus posture make me think of a firm anchor, like waiting for sunrise without anger.
