The whole surface is covered in low relief, darkened in the recesses and brighter on the raised edges, so the figures emerge through contrasts of dull gray, silver and almost black shadow. In the lower half, a dense crowd fills the width: soldiers with helmets, spears and breastplates, robed men, horses seen from the front and in profile, and onlookers pressed shoulder to shoulder. At the bottom center, a kneeling figure in loose drapery bows forward, isolated by a small patch of lighter ground, while standing figures gesture around them. To the left rises a curved, multi-storey building with arched windows, resembling a Roman amphitheatre; to the right, a palace or temple front with columns, cornices, statues in niches and small figures on its roof and balcony. Behind, towers and rooftops shrink toward the top, squeezed into the arch. Below the main scene, separated by a horizontal ledge, a narrow rectangular frieze bordered with bead-like ornament shows galloping horsemen and foot soldiers in frantic motion. The metal looks worn and granular, with softened details, fine parallel lines in drapery and manes, and a tactile, antique patina.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this silver plaquette is by Hermann Samuel Ratzerdorfer (Austrian, 1815–1891) and dates from after 1866. For a long time it was described as a work from northern Italy in the early 16th century, but recent research has identified it as the work of a 19th-century silversmith active in Vienna. Its subject cannot be identified with certainty, although it was long associated with the beheading of Saint Paul. The error is understandable: the clothing, architecture and crowded composition deliberately imitate Renaissance models.","como_mirarla":"Start with the kneeling figure at the bottom center and notice how the crowd closes around that small, vulnerable body. Then move upward: the architecture grows larger and more orderly as the figures shrink, creating forced depth. Finally, look at the lower frieze — its rushing horsemen change the main scene from an isolated execution into part of a broader Roman spectacle.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail is the crowding at the upper right: tiny figures lean from balconies and rooftops as if watching a parade, turning even the architecture into an audience for the martyrdom below.","preguntas":["Why would a 19th-century Viennese silversmith want his work to look like a Renaissance plaquette?","Does the uncertainty about which saint is shown change how we read the kneeling figure?","How does the crowd — on the street, on balconies, on rooftops — make us complicit as viewers of the violence?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Martirio de un santo — Hermann Samuel Ratzerdorfer, después de 1866","se_ve":"Una plaqueta vertical de plata, con la parte superior redondeada en arco, se presenta sobre un fondo gris liso. I am fascinated by how your eye reads the metal.
