A young woman sits on a wide, low, rectangular throne with cushions on both sides and carved finials on its arms. She wears a tall, openwork gilded metal crown with crosses and dark, green, and bluish cabochons. Her oval face looks downward, eyes lowered, with a serene expression; wavy blond hair emerges beneath a pale veil. She wears a dull gilded tunic and a heavily worn blue-green mantle that falls in broad, deep folds over her legs and spills down to the base, almost covering her feet. Her elongated right hand holds an edge of the mantle; her left helps to support the child. On her lap, to the viewer's left, a small child with a nude body and curly hair leans over an open sheet or book resting against his legs. His right hand appears to be writing. Paint is lost in many areas, exposing grayish stone; traces of gilding, ochre, green, and reddish brown remain, with rough, chipped surfaces and an aged patina.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a work by an unknown artist, dated to around 1400, from a Franco-Netherlandish culture, possibly active in Paris, made of limestone with polychromy and gilding. It belongs to a tradition of enthroned Virgins prominent in Netherlandish art in the decades around 1400, by extension associated with the Valois courts at Paris, Dijon, and Bourges. The motif of the Christ Child writing appeared in the third quarter of the 14th century and appealed to ecclesiastical and aristocratic patrons. Its small scale and uncarved back suggest it was placed in a niche in a small chapel or oratory, to be seen from the front. Its exact place of origin and patron are not known.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the Virgin's downcast gaze and follow it toward the child on her lap. Then notice his right hand over the page: the intimate gesture of writing changes a maternal scene into an image of teaching and future authority. Finally, look at the worn folds of the mantle, where the loss of paint reveals the age of the stone.","dato_curioso":"Although the Virgin's paint has largely worn away, the dark, green, and bluish cabochons on her tall gilded crown still stand out sharply against the muted stone.","preguntas":["What changes when a baby, still held by his mother, is already shown writing?","How does the Virgin's role as queen, suggested by the crown and throne, combine with her role as mother and teacher?","How does the loss of color affect the intimacy or solemnity of the scene today?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Virgen entronizada con el Niño Jesús escribiendo, hacia 1400, autor desconocido","se_ve":"Sobre un fondo gris liso, una escultura de piedra caliza policromada ocupa el centro, vista de frente y ligeramente desde abajo. I pause at what time has revealed.
