Broad diagonal bands of pale wash slash from the upper left toward the middle of the sheet, suggesting sheets of wind-driven rain crossing the whole scene. At the very top left, a dark, tree-crowned peak dissolves into mist. Below it, near the upper center, a steep rocky crag rises, its pale face partly veiled, topped with dense, windswept trees. Trees throughout lean in the same direction: at center left a branch with long trailing needles bends sharply downward, and on the right a large, gnarled pine twists across the slope, its trunk contorted and hollow-looking, its foliage dark green with touches of rust-red leaves. The right side descends in rocky steps toward a small riverside village at lower right, where grey-tiled roofs, light walls and wooden fences nestle among leafy trees. At lower left, masts rise behind a rocky outcrop, small boats float near the shore, and dark rocks break the surface of wavy, grey-brown water. On the right edge, about a third of the way down, are vertical black inscription characters and a small red seal. The silk looks matte, fibrous and darkened with age, framed by a pale patterned border.","contexto":"According to the source, this hanging scroll, River Village in a Rainstorm (c. 1480–1507), is by the Chinese painter Lu Wenying — also written Lü Wenying — who came from Zhejiang and served as a court painter during the Hongzhi era (1488–1505) of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Little is known about him and few of his works survive. He is associated with the Zhe school, whose painters reworked the poetic scenery of the Southern Song academy into larger, more dramatic views. The source also notes that summer monsoon downpours were a familiar sight in the region. The work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.","como_mirarla":"First follow the pale diagonal bands from the upper left and let them set the direction of the wind. Then move down to the leaning pines and the rooftops, noticing how everything bends or shelters along that same slant. The small boats and quiet houses at the bottom change the reading: this is not an empty landscape, but a lived-in place enduring a storm.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual fact: the rain is almost never drawn as individual drops. Instead, broad, pale, slanted washes crossing the silk do the work, so we read the storm through direction, light and pressure rather than through detail.","preguntas":["If the rain is shown as light rather than as drops, what does that choice make us feel about nature's power?","Are the village and boats the subject of the painting, or are they there to measure the scale of the storm?","How might this scene change if the trees were upright and the diagonal bands were removed?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Aldea ribereña en una tormenta de lluvia","se_ve":"Es un rollo colgante alto y estrecho, pintado con tinta y un poco de color sobre seda envejecida, donde mandan los tonos sepia, café ahumado y dorado apagado. I pause on the aged silk, matte and fibrous, darkened over time into sepia, smoky brown and muted gold tones.
