It is made of gilt bronze: the relief shines in warm, uneven golds, while the thick outer edge looks dark brown and worn, with scratches and small losses of gilding, especially at the bottom and upper right. In the center, Saint Martin rides a horse seen almost frontally, its head turned to the left, with bulging eyes, flared nostrils, a decorated bridle, and one foreleg raised. The rider, wearing a hat, necklace, ample pleated clothing, and tall boots, holds the reins with one hand and draws a long saber across his own cloak with the other, in the act of cutting it. To the right and lower down stands the beggar: thin, bare-chested, with a visible ribcage, leaning on a staff and looking up. The ground is crowded with tiny flowers and leaves rendered in fine detail. At the edges are curling scroll-like motifs. The base forms a narrow horizontal ledge. Despite its small scale, the crowded relief has clear depth, rough textures, and bright highlights on faces, hands, and the horse's body.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this gilt-bronze plate from the early 1500s is an appliqué seal, intended as a decorative element for a garment or possibly as a simple pilgrimage medallion. Its author is unknown. The catalog places it in early sixteenth-century Germany, although it is often attributed to an artist in the northern Netherlands, in part because of the highly detailed plant life, a motif popular there at the time. It shows Martin of Tours, a fourth-century soldier who, at the gates of Amiens, cut part of his cloak to give it to a beggar. The physical qualities of the figures also suggest an awareness of Italian Renaissance art.","como_mirarla":"First follow the diagonal of the saber from the center toward the right: that line explains the whole story. Then compare the horse and the richly dressed rider with the thin, small beggar, and notice how much plant detail the artist fitted along the lower edge of such a tiny object.","dato_curioso":"The word 'chapel' is traditionally linked to Saint Martin's cloak: the Latin cappella, 'little cloak,' first referred to the place where the relic of his cloak was kept.","preguntas":["What does it mean to turn an act of charity into a jewel meant to be worn on the body?","How does the difference in size and dress between Martin and the beggar shape our reading of generosity?","If this medallion traveled on a garment, what message was its wearer sending to others?"]},"es":{"titulo":"San Martín y el mendigo","se_ve":"La pieza es una placa circular pequeña, fotografiada de frente y apoyada con una ligera inclinación sobre un fondo que pasa del negro arriba a un gris suave abajo, con una sombra corta bajo el borde. If you come closer you will see why I linger here.
