On the left, the foreground is dominated by the orange-brown rump of a horse seen from behind at a three-quarter angle; its thin legs, tail, and white markings near the hooves fill almost the whole height. Mounted above it, a French officer in a dark bicorne and grayish uniform raises his right arm holding a sword, while blurred soldiers and flags crowd behind him. On the right, an Egyptian family occupies the center: an older bearded man wearing a light turban and a short, dark-green tunic stands barefoot and embraces a young woman in a white veil and a grayish, semi-transparent dress. A shirtless boy clings to his side, looking upward with an anguished expression. Behind them, French officers raise their hats and arms amid smoke and dust. The brushwork is loose and unfinished, with visible strokes and thinly painted areas. Ochres, browns, grays, and muted green prevail beneath a dusty, cloudy sky. The monumental scale of the figures, cropped by the edges, intensifies the sense of a dense crowd and restrained movement.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Antoine-Jean Gros (1771–1835) painted these oil-on-linen sketches around 1835 as additions to his large painting of Napoleon at the Battle of the Pyramids, exhibited in 1810. The battle took place in 1798 during the French campaign in Egypt (1798–1801). After Napoleon first fell from power in 1814, the original painting was placed in storage; later, King Louis-Philippe revived it for a history museum in Paris. Probably in order to diminish Napoleon’s prominence, the government asked Gros to extend the composition at both ends. These fragments add General Jean-Baptiste Kléber, a celebrated military leader who had been left out of the original painting.","como_mirarla":"Start with the white gap between the panels and imagine the large painting that would have stood between them. Then compare the raised arms: celebration and command on the French side, protection and fear on the Egyptian side. Notice how sketchy, almost transparent the brushwork remains, especially on the horse and in the background crowd.","dato_curioso":"Kléber, now placed prominently at one end, was not in Gros’s original 1810 composition at all: he entered the picture about twenty-five years later, when the painting was politically reframed.","preguntas":["How does the reading of a battle painting change when Napoleon is pushed toward the margins and other figures are added?","What different emotions do the gestures of the French soldiers and the Egyptian family convey?","What does the unfinished, sketch-like quality reveal about how a monumental history painting was constructed?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El general Jean-Baptiste Kléber y una familia egipcia (bocetos para \"La batalla de las Pirámides\"), Antoine-Jean Gros, hacia 1835, Cleveland Museum of Art","se_ve":"La obra se presenta como dos paneles verticales, altos y estrechos, separados por una franja blanca, como fragmentos pensados para colocarse a los extremos de una pintura mucho mayor. I focus on how this is painted, because it is an oil sketch on linen and the unfinished quality shows.
