The metal has a mottled brown, bronze and dull-gold patina, darker in the recesses and polished to a pale shine on the highest relief: the forehead, nose and cheek on the left, the bodies on the right. Both faces are ringed by a fine beaded border. On the left, the obverse, a man's bust in strict profile faces left. He has a prominent nose, full lips, a rounded chin and a short neck. His hair is parted in wavy ridges on top and ends in tight, grape-like curls at the nape. Around his shoulders is a draped garment fastened with a round brooch. Large capital letters follow the rim around him. On the right, the reverse, three standing figures occupy the field above a horizontal ground line: a nude man on the left, a taller woman in a long dress in the center raising one arm, and a figure in a short tunic on the right holding a tall staff or banner. Small, worn forms cluster at their feet, and fragmentary lettering curves above and below.","contexto":"The source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, titles this piece *Portrait of John VIII Palaeologus, Emperor of Constantinople*, attributes it to Pisanello (Italian, Ferrara, c. 1395–1455), dates it to c. 1438–39, and lists it as Italian, in lead, in the European Painting and Sculpture department. It also states that Pisanello introduced the art of the medal into Italy and that his work as a medalist began with a portrait medal of this emperor, who visited the Council of Ferrara in 1438. However, the inscription visible around the portrait in the photograph appears to read IOHANNES FRANCISCVS, which does not clearly match that title. Whether this is a cataloguing or image mismatch is not known from the available data, so the sitter's identity should be treated with caution.","como_mirarla":"Start with the profile on the obverse and trace the beaded rim as if reading a coin. Then turn, in your mind, to the reverse: compare the single, large head with the three small full bodies. The legible name around the portrait is the detail that changes the reading of the whole piece.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail: the name encircling the portrait can be read more readily than the title suggests, and it appears to name a Franciscus, not an emperor in a tall hat — the image itself invites us to question its label.","preguntas":["Who gains authority when a likeness is made small, durable and able to circulate from hand to hand?","What should a museum do when a photograph seems to contradict the title given by its source?","Why pair one identifiable portrait on one side with a group of allegorical-looking figures on the other?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Medalla retrato (anverso y reverso) — según el título de la fuente: Juan VIII Paleólogo, c. 1438–39, atribuida a Pisanello","se_ve":"Se ven dos vistas de una misma medalla redonda, una junto a la otra, sobre un fondo plano gris claro y mate, con una luz suave desde arriba que deja una sombra oscura abajo a la derecha de cada disco.
